Bell Helicopter has demonstrated a significant commitment to sustainability by logging over 700 flight hours using blended sustainable aviation fuel (SAF) in one of its Bell 505 light-single helicopters. This achievement follows the manufacturer’s 2021 commitment to incorporate SAF into its demonstration fleet and training academy operations.
In early 2023 the Bell 505 became the first single-engine helicopter to successfully fly on 100% unblended SAF. While current commercial regulations allow for SAF blends up to 50% with standard Jet-A fuel, engines are expected, soon, to include capabilities for 100% drop-in SAF, which reduce aircraft carbon emissions by up to 80% over traditional fuels.
