NBAA welcomes the Massachusetts Port Authority’s (Massport’s) recently announced roadmap for increasing the use of sustainable aviation fuel (SAF) in the Commonwealth and across New England.

Massport’s plan for SAF growth was detailed in a series of recommendations produced by its Massachusetts Sustainable Aviation Fuel Working Group submitted recommendations to Gov. Maura Healey.

The plan was unveiled by Massport CEO Rich Davey at a June 6 Regional Sustainable Aviation Fuel Workshop for Massachusetts and New England, hosted by Massport. About 130 industry leaders, stakeholders and policymakers – including NBAA Regional Director Brittany Davies – took part in the full-day event, during which participants examined practical steps for advancing policy and technology to support the development and use of the fuel, which can slash emissions from aviation by up to 80% over carbon output from legacy fuels.

The Massport recommendations included:

  • Launching a regional SAF planning study
  • Establishing a Massachusetts/New England SAF hub
  • Advance SAF tax credit legislation
  • Form a regional SAF alliance

Gov. Healey said the workshop was valuable in bringing together leaders from government and industry to benefit from the informed perspectives of all stakeholders working for a more sustainable future in aviation.

“We gained many valuable insights,” Davies said. “It was beneficial to understand the current status of SAF from various industry viewpoints, spanning demand, end-users and operators. The strong presence and cross section of professionals and companies reflects well on the commitment to move the needle forward in the state.

“The objective of the workshop really was about diving into deep conversations about       sustainability and SAF in the Northeast ,where there are hurdles to production logistics,” Davies added. “This region is home to a number of advanced technology institutions and pioneering educational programs, whose partnerships are crucial in advancing this effort and conquering those hurdles.”

Government and industry efforts to promote the production, availability and use of SAF are a key focus of CLIMBING. FAST., a business aviation industry advocacy campaign that educates policymakers and opinion leaders about the sector’s many societal benefits, including its leadership in sustainability innovation, underscored by a commitment to achieve net-zero carbon emissions by 2050.

Business aviation was among the first advocates for SAF development, and the fuels are powering an increasing number of flights every day. Learn more about the CLIMBING. FAST. advocacy campaign, including its focus on promoting SAF.
