A diverse coalition in Minnesota is championing the expansion of sustainable aviation fuel (SAF) production in the state, highlighting its potential to slash aviation greenhouse gas emissions by up to 80% compared to traditional jet fuel. While federal tax credits have already laid the groundwork, advocates emphasize that further state-level support is vital to leverage local infrastructure and the strategic importance of the Minneapolis-Saint Paul International Airport.
Beyond the environmental benefits, the shift toward SAF offers a significant economic boost for the agricultural sector in Minnesota, particularly for soybean farmers who can convert crush byproducts into valuable fuel while maintaining protein supplies for livestock. Experts say that a diversified approach—utilizing a variety of feedstocks like corn, soybeans, and emerging crops like camelina—is essential for the aviation industry to successfully reach long-term emissions targets.
