Signature Aviation, a prominent business aviation terminal operator, has teamed up with infrastructure developer UrbanV and aerospace startup Electra Aero to establish regional flight routes utilizing zero-emission hybrid-electric aircraft.
Under a recently signed memorandum of understanding, the three companies will work together to integrate specialized landing facilities, known as vertiports, with Signature Aviation’s extensive international network of terminals. The initiative centers on Electra Aero’s EL9 Ultra Short, a nine-passenger hybrid-electric aircraft capable of taking off and landing on runways as short as 150 feet, which aims to provide a convenient alternative to driving for journeys ranging from 50 to 250 miles.
Although the agreement does not outline specific locations or ground support logistics for initial operations, the collaborators plan to identify high-demand urban and regional corridors to implement this new transit model. This venture represents a significant step for all three entities, matching UrbanV’s infrastructure expertise with Signature Aviation’s footprint of over 200 terminals worldwide. It also aligns with Electra Aero’s optimistic market projections for its Direct Aviation services, which predict substantial regional passenger demand across thousands of potential flight paths in the United States.
For decades, business aircraft manufacturers have pioneered propulsion systems that increase fuel efficiencies. That innovative work is also accelerating the introduction of new eco-friendly aircraft that use hybrid, electric and even hydrogen-powered propulsion.
