Washington Governor Bob Ferguson recently celebrated the grand opening of Airplant One in Moses Lake, recognized as the inaugural commercial facility in the United States to manufacture sustainable jet fuel utilizing captured carbon dioxide.
Owned and operated by the technology company Twelve, the cutting-edge site marks a significant milestone for the aviation industry’s transition to green energy. The manufacturing process functions by extracting carbon dioxide from the atmosphere, merging it with water and clean electricity, and transforming the composition into a synthetic hydrocarbon fuel that can immediately drop into existing transportation infrastructure.
This newly engineered power source delivers a 90% reduction in greenhouse gas emissions when compared to traditional petroleum products.
The development has already established 100 new local jobs in Moses Lake, with corporate leadership and state officials anticipating further economic expansion and supply chain growth across the region as Alaska Airlines prepares to launch its first flight powered by the synthetic fuel by the end of the year.
Sustainable aviation fuels are key to energy independence and generate job creation in tech, agriculture and other parts of the economy.
