Sky Harbour Group Corporation has initiated construction on a 16-acre business aviation campus at Chicago Executive Airport, representing one of the largest private infrastructure ventures in the airfield’s history. Scheduled to open in early 2028, the initial development phase will introduce four hangars spanning up to 37,000 square feet, complemented by adjoining office space, vehicle parking and dedicated ground support amenities.
Unlike conventional fixed-base operators (FBOs) that cater to transient air traffic, this specialized home base operator model focuses exclusively on aircraft permanently stationed at the site, delivering tailored security and direct fueling services for tenant fleets.
Regional leaders and airport officials anticipate that the project will generate up to $550 million in long-term economic activity while creating and sustaining hundreds of local jobs. Jointly owned by the Village of Wheeling and the City of Prospect Heights, Chicago Executive Airport serves as a major reliever facility for O’Hare International Airport and manages around 100,000 flight operations each year.
Expanding local hangar capacity and building new infrastructure strengthens the airfield’s role as a key regional transportation hub, ensuring long-term financial vitality and economic benefits for surrounding communities.
Independent studies show that business aviation helps support 1.3 million American jobs and contributes $340 billion to the U.S. economy.
