Electric aircraft developer Archer Aviation successfully conducted a piloted intercity round-trip flight test in California using its all-electric Midnight prototype. Operating in close coordination with the Federal Aviation Administration, the test article departed from Salinas Municipal Airport and landed at Monterey Regional Airport before completing the return journey.
Each flight segment took approximately nine minutes to traverse, cutting travel time dramatically compared to driving between the two locations, which typically requires more than half an hour by car.
The flight demonstration represents a major operational milestone as the manufacturer prepares to launch electric vertical takeoff and landing operations under the federal eVTOL Integration Pilot Program later this year. Leadership emphasizes that these short intercity missions establish a template for upcoming air taxi services planned across partner states including Texas, Florida, and New York. Additionally, the trial serves as foundational groundwork for the company’s designated role as the official air taxi provider for the 2028 Olympic Games in Los Angeles.
