Heart Aerospace achieved a major milestone in regional aviation with the debut flight of its full-scale demonstrator, the Heart X1, at Plattsburgh International Airport in New York. Operating under a special certificate from the Federal Aviation Administration, the piloted aircraft featuring a 106-foot wingspan completed a 27-minute test circuit, demonstrating the viability of battery-powered propulsion for the large aircraft.
Generating over one megawatt of power, the flight utilized roughly five dollars worth of electricity, highlighting the stark cost differences between electric propulsion and conventional jet fuel. Designed as a testbed for aerodynamics and flight control software, the experimental aircraft serves as the foundation for the manufacturer’s upcoming commercial model, the ES-30, which has already secured purchase interest from major regional and international operators.
Building upon data gathered from the test program, the Swedish manufacturer aims to certify its 30-seat hybrid-electric production airliner for commercial entry around 2031. Industry partners anticipate that switching to electric propulsion architectures could slash overall operating expenses by over 40% through reduced fuel consumption, simplified maintenance needs, and enhanced airframe reliability.
Development of the first pre-production aircraft is already underway at a specialized facility in Los Angeles, with prototype testing scheduled for 2028. Beyond offering significant financial savings to commercial operators, the initiative seeks to establish cleaner regional flight support without emissions.
Powered by hybrid, electric and hydrogen propulsion technologies, advanced air mobility vehicles like the Heart X1 are a key element in business aviation’s mission to achieve net-zero carbon emissions by 2050.
