easyJet and Rolls-Royce have achieved a major milestone in aviation by successfully testing a jet engine powered entirely by hydrogen fuel. In a first for the industry, a modified Rolls-Royce Pearl 15 engine was run at full take-off power using 100% hydrogen during ground trials at NASA’s Stennis Space Center in Mississippi. The test demonstrated that a modern jet engine can operate safely on hydrogen through all phases of a simulated flight, including start-up, take-off, cruise, and landing, marking a significant step toward reducing aviation emissions.

The breakthrough is the result of a multi-year collaboration involving industry partners and a phased testing program that began with earlier experiments and progressively advanced to full engine integration. The effort has generated key technical insights into hydrogen combustion, fuel systems, and engine adaptation, supporting the feasibility of hydrogen-powered aircraft in the future.

The initiative aligns with broader decarbonization goals in aviation, with hydrogen expected to complement sustainable aviation fuel as part of a long-term strategy to lower carbon output while enabling continued industry growth.
