The Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) reversed course and ordered the Indianapolis Downtown Heliport to remain open for public use. This move blocks the Indianapolis Airport Authority (IAA) from selling and potentially redeveloping the site for non-aviation purposes.

The decision follows strong pressure from state leaders and aviation advocates, who stressed the heliport’s importance for local emergency services, law enforcement missions and pilot training.

The decision aligns with new federal priorities to protect key aviation infrastructure for emerging tech, like advanced air mobility (AAM) and eVTOL aircraft. Supporters say keeping downtown flight access open is crucial for community safety and future transport networks. Federal regulators concluded the heliport offers a long-term benefit to both the national airspace and the local community.

Business aviation connects communities across nearly every corner of the United States, many of which lack access to commercial airline service. Business aviation provides access to 5,000 U.S. airports, many of which are small community airfields that empower local economies.
