Joby Aviation reached a major technology milestone by successfully completing a fully autonomous cross-country flight spanning nearly 3,200 miles across the United States. Operating without manual intervention from the onboard safety pilot, the aircraft completed every flight phase independently, including ground taxiing, launches, point-to-point navigation and touch-downs. The historic journey concluded in North Carolina near the historic site where the Wright brothers achieved the first powered airplane flight.

Throughout the transcontinental flight, teams monitored systems remotely from operations centers in California and South Carolina. Company leaders highlighted that self-operating flight capabilities will play an increasingly vital role in modernizing transportation, enabling rapid delivery of critical medical supplies, improved disaster relief access and enhanced support for defense missions while removing human pilots from high-risk scenarios.

eVTOL aircraft are powered by true-zero propulsion technologies – batteries and hydrogen fuel cells, instead of conventional combustion engines – making them a carbon-free form of air transportation for a variety of mission applications.
