Ed Bolen, president and CEO of the National Business Aviation Association, has a new op-ed in The Hill, setting the record straight and telling the Institute for Policy Studies (IPS) and Chuck Collins the full story and context for evaluating business aviation’s incredible sustainability leadership and other societal benefits.
The IPS and Collins rely on incomplete or selectively chosen evidence, producing an inaccurate picture of the industry’s leadership in carbon reduction, and the sector’s other benefits to citizens, companies and communities.
Bolen’s op-ed, published Aug. 7, 2026, questions why Collins cherry-picked business aviation flights that are made in connection with the FIFA World Cup games, thereby inferring that a relative few flights made every four years amount to a routine traffic pattern.
Equally troubling, the op-ed’s review of those flights overlooks longer-term trends in emissions reduction, such that experts agree the sector accounts for but a tiny fraction of overall transportation emissions.
Bolen’s piece goes on to highlight the industry’s investments in lower-emission technologies, including sustainable aviation fuel, more efficient aircraft and engines and emerging propulsion systems intended to support a goal of net-zero carbon emissions. In addition to the sector’s sustainability leadership, Bolen’s op-ed notes that business aviation provides significant economic and transportation benefits by connecting underserved communities, supporting businesses, and enabling humanitarian missions.
