The North Central Texas Council of Governments has launched a $1 million grant program to fund electric aircraft charging equipment across public-use airports in the Dallas-Fort Worth region. Public airfields located within the agency’s 12-county planning jurisdiction can request individual awards of up to $200,000, which require no matching local funds.
The financial support covers the purchase of electric vertical takeoff and landing chargers alongside the immediate installation infrastructure needed to make them operational, though standalone electrical upgrades that do not yield an active charger are excluded.
This capital was originally set aside for a planned mobility flight demonstration coinciding with the 2026 World Cup. However, due to extended timelines surrounding regulatory approvals and Federal Aviation Administration aircraft certification, local officials redirected the funds toward permanent charging hardware and overall airfield readiness. The updated effort aligns with North Texas’ participation in the broader eVTOL Integration Pilot Program, aiming to establish reliable operating procedures and technical standards to attract future commercial electric flight operators to the area.
eVTOL aircraft are powered by true-zero propulsion technologies – batteries and hydrogen fuel cells, instead of conventional combustion engines – making them a carbon-free form of air transportation for a variety of mission applications.
