Emergency personnel in Hyde County, NC, have initiated a pioneering trial using single-seat, vertical-takeoff aircraft to deliver emergency care rapidly. Operated by Hyde County Emergency Medical Services in partnership with manufacturer Pivotal, the BlackFly aircraft allows a trained paramedic to fly directly to dispatch location coordinates powered by electricity.

By arriving at incident scenes up to 20 minutes faster than ground units, responder personnel can initiate advanced life support measures and stabilize individuals while awaiting standard transport vehicles.

The implementation required extensive operational preparation, including over 300 training flights to master simplified joystick controls and map out flight routes around environmental constraints. Program organizers addressed complex regulatory hurdles, securing approval under public aircraft operations in collaboration with regional aviation authorities. Following two successful initial dispatches, stakeholders view the initiative as an operational blueprint to refine airspace protocols, expand battery performance, and potentially adapt future fleet iterations for specialized duties like uncrewed medical payload delivery.

For decades, business aircraft manufacturers have pioneered propulsion systems that increase fuel efficiencies, including the introduction of new eco-friendly aircraft that use hybrid, electric and even hydrogen-powered propulsion.
